Most gem color is caused by selective
absorption, which is influenced by chemical composition and crystal structure.
Although red garnet and ruby look
alike, they absorb light differently, so you can use the spectroscope to tell
them apart. For each gem, the spectroscope shows a distinctly different set of
lines and bands.
